Getting Started with Social Selling: What You Need to Know Before You Post Another Thing

Introduction

You’re ready to dive into social selling. Maybe you’ve joined a new company, started sharing your products online, or simply want to turn your social media presence into income. The excitement is there—but so is the overwhelm.

What do you post? When do you show up? Where should you even start?

Here’s the truth: jumping into social selling without direction is like heading on a road trip without a map. You’ll waste time, energy, and gas—and still not get where you want to go.

That’s why this post is all about what matters most, when to focus, and where to start—so you can step into social selling with clarity and confidence.

What: The Foundation of Social Selling

Before you ever hit “post,” you need to know what social selling really is (and isn’t).

  • Social selling is NOT spamming links. It’s about building trust, relationships, and conversations that lead to sales.

  • Social selling IS showing up with purpose. Every post, story, or message should move your audience closer to knowing, liking, and trusting you.

So what do you need to get started?

Clarity in Your Message
Your audience should instantly know who you are and what you do.

Confidence in Your Role
Believe in your value—people buy certainty.

Consistency in Your Presence
Social media rewards those who show up regularly.

These three elements—clarity, confidence, consistency—are the backbone of your business. Without them, even the best content falls flat.

When: Timing That Builds Trust

One of the most common questions I hear is: “How often should I post?”

Here’s the truth: there’s no magic number—but when you show up consistently matters far more than posting randomly.

Think about your audience like a friend. If you only hear from that friend once in a while, the relationship weakens. If they’re constantly around, you feel connected. The same applies here.

When to Focus Your Efforts as You Start

  • Show up weekly at minimum.

  • Establish a rhythm (3–4 times a week is a solid start).

  • Prioritize your best times—when your audience is most active.

Consistency over time builds the trust needed for sales.

Where: Choosing the Right Platform to Start

Here’s a big myth: you need to be everywhere. Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn—the list is endless.

The truth? You only need to start where your audience already is.

Tips for Deciding Where to Start

  • Go where your audience already gathers.

  • Focus on mastering one platform before expanding.

  • Repurpose later once you’ve built a foundation.

Trying to be everywhere dilutes your energy. Being strategic about where you show up amplifies it.

The Beginner’s Trap: Mistaking Activity for Progress

Many new social sellers fall into the trap of thinking “busy = successful.” They post constantly, join every group, chase every new platform trend, and wonder why nothing sticks.

The problem isn’t effort. The problem is direction.

Instead of asking, “Am I doing enough?” shift to:

  • Am I clear in my message (what)?

  • Am I consistent in showing up (when)?

  • Am I focused on the right space (where)?

The First Wins to Look For

When you’re getting started, don’t only measure success by immediate sales. Some of your first signs of momentum will be:

  • People commenting, “This is so me!” on your posts.

  • Getting DMs asking for advice or more info.

  • Seeing your content shared by others.

  • Having your audience start conversations with you.

These are the building blocks of future sales.

What NOT to Do When You’re Starting Out

Just as important as what to do is what not to do:

  • Don’t copy and paste what others are posting.

  • Don’t spam links.

  • Don’t disappear for weeks.

  • Don’t try to be perfect—consistency matters more than flawless design.

Takeaway: Getting Started Is Simpler Than You Think

When you’re beginning your social selling journey, remember:

  • What matters most: clarity, confidence, and consistency.

  • When to show up: often enough to be remembered, consistently enough to be trusted.

  • Where to start: one platform where your audience already spends time.

It’s tempting to overcomplicate, but simplicity wins.
